Can a Ford flex fuel sensor be used?

Post by lemans70sport »

I found a 2000 Ford Taurus with the 3.0L flex fuel engine in it at a junk yard. I am running E85 and was wondering if I could use the flex fuel sensor from it. I've read about the flex fuel sensor used on Chevy cars but nothing about the Ford or other sensors.
Thanks

Does anyone have the answer to this. I have come across some information that points to the Ford Seimans unit being internally identical, but do not have one to test. I would like to use the Ford, due to the fact that it apparently has threaded inputs.

I am making the assumption that either the GM or the Ford sensor will be taking a 5 or 12v input and giving a proportional voltage output. In that regard, if you can get them cheaply at the junkyard, you could experiment. The sensors might be opposite of each other electrically.

Connect some wires and immerse them in a container of E85and also in gasoline. That should allow you to compare their behavior to each other and you could then figure out how they’d need to be connected to MS.

Of course, there might be a whole lot more to it than that, but that’s the approach I’d take.
Needs to get the toes out of the water and just jump off the diving board!!!

According to lots of literature, the GM gives a PWM output with the frequency for ethanol % and the pulse width for temperature. 50 Hz 0% & 150 Hz 100%. I could not find definite literature on the Ford. Was hoping someone had the answer for me to save time and money.

The MS flex fuel code was developed and tested with a Ford flex fuel sensor, which provides a frequency output that is proportional to the amount of alcohol vs gasoline. The GM FF sensor is very similar. Either one should work but needs to be calibrated, as was mentioned, unless you have good documentation for the model you have that tells you what frequency means no alcohol and what freq is pure alcohol.
