Always rich

Post by mr_force »

Hi there I have been having a problem with my car for awhile now I cant figure it out. I have a Ford 2.0L Zetec motor with Jenvey individual throttle bodies, 20lbs injectors, Innovate LC-1 wide-band, MSD coil with Ford racing plug wires, Denso iridium plugs, MSII PCB v3.57. I keep having problems with the AFR being 10.0 or lower, I just cant seem to lean it out. It was running at 8.2 once then it was all over the place and a friend told me the O2 sensor is burnt out and I replaced it. Now it continuously reads 10.0 and lower. Can anybody tell me how I can remedy this, what I did wrong, or where to hit with a hammer, because I want to pull out my hair by this point.

Thanks

A hot engine wouldn't run with an AFR of 10:1, so there must be a problem with the O2 sensor or the settings for that in the MS software, etc.

While it should run at that AFR, you'd be seeing massive clouds of black smoke if you are doing this. Is the engine in fact producing a lot of smoke?

It is not pouring out clouds of smoke, but you can really smell that it is super rich. I had carbs on this motor last year, but took them off because I couldn't find anybody to tune them for me; but I got better gas mileage on the carbs then I do with the fuel injection now.

Unless you can find someone with a good map for your exact engine, you'll have to go through the full tuning process from scratch. It's all in the manual. Or find a MS specialist to do it for you. It doesn't take long to get an engine running well, but fine tuning for the best economy can take longer.

Thanks for that bit of information, is there a section on this forum to ask for anybody if they might have a map that they might have used on their motor?

The chances of finding an MSQ for your exact setup isn't good. And even then tolerances mean it'll likely need some fine tuning.
I have a Rover V-8 which is a very common engine to MS in the UK. And have never found a good MSQ (B&G code) for my standard unit - most are modified. And just changing the cam makes a difference to the settings.
