Coil quit working.

Post by rv3bpilot »

I'm running MS II with code 2.905, Corvair 2.7 Liter air cooled engine, Pertronix Ignition timing run by MS II
Everything was running great but I did have to set the dwell to 3.9 or it would run rough. I have verified that the power is only on when cranking. Do you think I burned up the coil some how?
I have a tac. signal. The mega. Squirt controler is working fine, well the LED is flashing when I crank over the engine but only one weak spark came out of the spark plug when I turned it over several times.

I have found that after cranking the engine over several times that the LEDs I have hooked to the coil quit flashing but I still have a tac signal reading 250 RPMs. I also checked the LED ignition light on the Megasquirt and it is flashing even when the coil LEDs quit, but somehow it quits sending the signal to the coil...

I am kind of interested in how/where you connected LED's to the coil.

I hooked the LEDs straight up to the coil, Positive and Negitive. So each ignition event the LEDs would flash.
My latest adventure however is that I dis-connected the MS II from the ingnition and ran the ignition from the distributor as it was from the factory. Now I have a great spark to the plugs but it seems that the MS II is now flooding the engine. It still reads the RPMs as I am now taking the signal directly off the coil. I have tried to adjust the fuel by turning off the cold start enrichments, and I made sure that the warm up en-richment were not turning on. Actual Cranking speed is 275 so I set the Max cranking speed to 350. I checked to make sure the acceleration en-richment was not kicking in. Then I changed the fuel delivery from alternating to simutanius and the fuel pulse stayed at 9 mil/Seconds. Then I changed the required fuel from 15 to 5 and the pulse stayed at 9 mil/Sec. ...Oh then I removed one of the injectors to see the pulse spray to see if it was indeed putting out a lot of fuel, and sure enough it was. I have not tried to re-instal the software yet...

What exactly are you using for an ignition module?

MS II 2905 software, Note that I found the reason my coil quit. The gear on the end of the crankshaft spun moving the timing 120 degrees from top dead center. The MS II works great it was the engine that gave up.. I purchased a new crankshaft and installed it and now the engine is running again.
