Hello everybody I need help with my EDIS-4 i plan to go over to some level of MS in the future but for now im struggling to get my base EDIS-4 to run my 1976 BMW 2002. iv been told that the system should run in default mode 10 degrees BFTDC without the aid of a second module be it MS or Megajolt. So iv got a 36-1 trigger wheel on my crank vr sensor EDIS-4 module that i got from pick a part in Long Beach CA. im useing Bosch 8mm grey same wires that a 95 escourt would use i bought new on amazon. Also im useing bosch WR7DC plugs. so im geting 1.5 volts ac on pins 5-6 at the module the ground for the module has verry low resistance (good ground). 12 volts at pin 2 of the coil pack and pin 8 at the module also i used sheilded cable for the vr sensor. i have verified that the module and the coil pack are recieving 12 volts or at least system voltage while cranking. tooth n#9 is aligned with the crank sensor when motor is at tdc n#1. i have replaced 2 modules 2 coil packs 2 vr sensors all from the junkyard but everybody says "the stuff is bullet proof" so im going to assume the parts are good also i have made sure that the vr sensor isnt wobbly or loose and that the trigger wheel is stright and true actually i bought a kit from 02Again witch is probably the best kit available for bmw m10 motors so the trigger wheel and sensor mounting i have kinda ruled out. so when i crank the starter motor the system sparks like 1 time accross all 4 leads then stops so the motor kinda starts then dies. then i get this real intermitant spark situation and of course the motor wont run like this. when i first started this project out i could get the system to start and run for a while in my driveway. but after i turned the ignition off it wouldnt restart until i waited like a day or 2. thats when i started throwing parts at it. i havnt ohmed out the wires but if i put a spark tester directly on the coil pack i get the same intermitant weak spark so it kinda tells me the wires and plugs arnt really suspect. I could really use some advice iv been battleing this thing off and on for 2 months. thanx
Thanx for the reply MattCramer. I checked the supply voltage at pin 2 of the coil pack and pin 8 of the EDIS-4 module both recieving system voltage or 9.6 or greater while cranking also checked the voltage drop accross both circuits and its zero volts it does show like .02 volts right when i turn the key off. I get the same numbers when checking pins 10 & 12 of the module and 1 & 3 of the coil pack witch represent the true primary fireing circuit. Iv read on other forums that EDIS users experience dislodged pins witch cause similar symptoms (weak spark no spark) anyway what about weak pin drag or weak pin tension? but wouldnt that show up on a voltage drop test? So im going to take the connectors apart and check each pin indavidualy. Im using a motorcraft coil pack out of a 95 ford escourt witch the standard ingrediant in any EDIS kit
Is the engine a bad place to ground the EDIS-4 module pin 9 and pin 7 the shielded cables for the vr sensor. im getting really intermitant spark and dont want to rule it out?
In my experience the block is the proper place to ground EDIS. I doubt that grounding to the block is causing your intermittent spark issue. I certainly would be looking at all wiring and connections though.
im getting intermitant spark on my EDIS-4 conversion i want to rule out the possibility of a bad coil pack im using a oem motorcraft coil pack with oem bosch wires and bosch wr7dc plugs whats the best way to test the coil pack? iv made sure that the module pin 8 and coil pack pin 2 have system or 12v available while cranking.
How Common is it for EDIS-4 module to fail. What type of symtom do they exhibit when they fail. intermitant spark, no spark at all, week spark, no pip, no saw or all of the above.
