Won't install
Any ideas Phil? Thx,
Jim
Re: Won't install
I am not a 7 expert, but I know in XP if you have a java issue you are in for a big headache.
The best I can offer would be to uninstall all then re install the most current.
Or sometime you can create a new user profile and install the update (I know it sounds funny but it will ignore files that are buried in user profiles.)
I wouldn't rule out spyware.
Last ditch would be a system restore to a previous date.
or back-up registry and delete anything java after uninstall.
Then if those don't work (format).

Re: Won't install
It is the installer that won't let it go in?
If you open a command prompt and type:
java -version
What do you get back?
was it from the Oracle download site that you installed Java?

Re: Won't install
?
TunerStudio requires Java Runtime Environment v1.6 or newer to run.
Please download and install JRE, then run this setup again.
Do you want to download it now?
yes/no"
If I type Java -version in the command prompt I get 1 program "java -version" and one file "jre-7u13-windows-x64.exe"
This was downloaded and installed from the Oracle website. There were no earlier versions installed. It is a new Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop purchased in December. Running ZoneAlarm firewall and antivirus.

Something like this:
Code: Select all
java version "1.7.0_03"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_03-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.1-b02, mixed mode)

Of course you've probably answered that question a thousand times, so I'll run a search.

Do you have a cable? Bluetooth is awesome from the phone and handy from the laptop at times, but I do still like a good old fashion cable most of the time with a laptop.

Quite. After spending all my working life in the broadcast industry, only use a radio link where there is no option.LT401Vette wrote:My Bluetooth Adapter recommendation would be:

Re: Won't install
I should probably ask though, do you think a P-II 266MHz processor will handle the job? It's running a stripped down install of XP-pro on 192Mb of ram and works fine with MegaTune but isn't exactly blazingly fast. I can add 96Mb to the ram and there is some slight chance of getting an additional 128 to work (tricky though).

Re: Won't install

I'm sure it will at time require patience, I think everything on there would

One important note, make sure it has the right video drivers installed. If it is running on something like windows default software drivers, something 4 times faster will still crawl..
These days there are so many cheap solutions like netbooks and what not that work well as cheap knock around tuning laptops.

Anyway I'm grateful for the assistance. Should be another week or so before anything more happens.

Re: Won't install
It used to be there were issues with most USB to serial drivers, a lot of driver bugs. But this has greatly improved. now if you just make sure you get a cable based on an FTDI chip, you know the drivers are sound, so it is just making sure you have a cable that is well shielded as USB will never hold up to EM noise like the old real serial cables. Even with the susceptibility to noise, USB works fine for the vast majority of users.
