Kettering, points, Pertronix Ignition timing control

Post by drholl »

I am confused on points (the Kettering system). I’m trying to NOT burn up another coil.
The link and the information in the link follows with a question.
http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/Ignition.htm

“The ability to change the 'input capture' gives you the option of configuring the trigger as the leading edge of the square wave, or the trailing edge. An example of a trailing edge firing is a mechanical points (Kettering) system, where the points cause the coil to fire when they open (pulling the +12 volt voltage 'signal' on the coil to ground). Some ignition systems may require triggering on the leading edge, however.”
Opening the points, doesn’t that allow the coil negative to go High and the magnetic flux to breakdown and cause the spark?

Here's where I get lost, Base Ignition Settings.
In searching the MS-II manual to correctly program the BIP-373 to control the timing, I didn't find any "Base Ignition Settings" for points or Crane or Pertronix. I believe the Crane and Pertronix would act just like points. I did setup the wiring with the 1,000 Ohm pull-up resistor inserted.

Would these settings be correct for the points or Pertronix ?
Ignition input capture = Rising edge (as the points OPEN) but it's inverted by U3 the 4N25
Cranking trigger = Trigger rise
Coil charging scheme = Standard coil charge
Spark output = Going High (inverted)

I would appreciate some helpful hints.
Thanks Holl
Just for fun. Go to YouTube and enter "Auto ambush: Extended interview with 1959 Cadillac owner" :D
KOAT TV does this in our area.
MS-II, V 3, 2.886, LC-1. 1971 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 350, 270 HP, >32 MPG @ 70 MPH. 1959 German Corvette, bought in Berlin in 1979, with a 160 "KPH" speedo. KPH??? - What were they thinking? 160 KPH is only 100 MPH. We can peg that in third gear!!! 1959 Cadillac, 502, 325 HP, 24 MPG @ 70 MPH, huge Chrome Bumpers and really BIG TAIL FINS!!! Holl

Yes, the Pertronix basically acts like a set of points, replicated out of solid state components. I've put together some notes on how to use the MS2 with this system here:
