Tunerstudio As a Permenant Dash Display

For discussing Phil Tobin's TunerStudio MS is the MegaSquirt edition of TunerStudio, a next generation tuning application. It provides the ability to configure and tune all MegaSquirt controllers and is 100% compatible with MegaTune ini files and msq's.

Tunerstudio As a Permenant Dash Display

Post by fran9r »

Hi guys,

I'd like to run tunerstudio as a complete set of replacement clocks for my motorbike, which will have a MS ecu installed.

What hardware will I need to do this? The 5 inch touchscreen seems a little small, so could I uses a colour screen, then supply this with a signal from a palm device? Or a stripped computer motherboard? Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Fran

It sounds pretty cool.

It won't work on a palm though, so you would probably want to get a mini-itx or even nano-itx based computer on a bike.

Specific computers seem expensive...how about a PDA?

I bought an EEEPC. They can be had for under $300.
It carry s my music and runs GPS as well.
Talking to the MS does not require a lot of power or cycles and the software foot print is small.
Battery life is between 4-6 hours.

MT and this software no problem for it.

Yeah those Intel Atom processors do a great job running and they come in cheap small machines with good battery life these days. They make great tuning or even dedicated car laptops/tablets.

Hi guys thanks for the replies.

I was hoping to use this on a motorcycle application -so maybe a PDA would be the way to go?

I'd want it in place of the original clocks, so could it be configured to flick to the dash diaplay on start up?

I am looking at different options for using TunerStudio MS as a permanent dash for a motorbike.

The asus eee 700 series (also named 2G and 4G) sells for around $100 on ebay these days. This is a complete, fully functional mini laptop, and should be a great starting poit for a permanent dash!

- Screen size is 7 inch with a 800 x 480 pixel resolution.
- Shockproof SSD flashdisk (2 gig and upwards)
- (up to) 900mhz celeron cpu.
- Ram is from 512 mb - 2 GB.
- OS: Linux (lots of variations available here - should be possible to install a very very light one for this use..?) or windows XP. (Some have even installed win 7, vista and Mac os X on these little laptops!).
- Connectivity via USB with serial port converter. (3 usb ports available)
- Touch screen kits available on ebay for approx $60-$70

Another alternative (not yet fully google'd) is to find a PDA that can run Linux, and that also has serial port or USB ports available to connect to microsquirt/megasquirt.

Question is: What is the smallest screen resolution TunerStudio MS can run on?

It should be able to go quite small, but there will be a few repercussions...
The buttons for the tuning menu's will likely get squashed and the text will turn to things like "Basic..."

Also the dialog will not fit on the screen, but TS will then give you scroll bars in the dialog, so it will still be workable, but more awkward. Usually I think most dialogs where designed to fit within 600 pixels high, but they are defined in the ini so vary by firmware.

With the PDA, I would worry about having a enough CPU power, the netbooks hold up well, especially if it is Atom based.

Wouldn't a more viable alternative be to use a small pc/laptop of whatever type, and just pump the display to a small touchscreen? Just throw the pc/laptop wherever you want . If a 'megaview' type lcd display doesn't come out soon for the Extra code...thats probably what I'll end up doing.

This would be on a bike, so throwing it wherever you want would require a very small laptop! But yes, this would be a good solution if packaging were not a problem.
