MSII, V3.0 No connection, etc

Post by jorknow »

First time putting a MS together, and running into some problems. I'm at step 40 where it calls to upload the firmware. I do not get any luck with this at all. When I tried to run the update utility, I got the following:

#!MSU-S19(Monitor_v2.890.abs.s19)
#!MSU-INI(megasquirt-II.ini)

I also tried running port checker, it said no connection made for both bauds and one valid port. I am using an USB to serial adapter purchased from DIYAutoTune, with all drivers installed. I looked around the forums, and didn't find much help other than a post saying that on the DB9, #5 should be grounded. Mine is not, and I have 20 ohms running through it. I am not quite sure why. Another problem I think is when the stim is plugged in, and I hook up the MSII board to it, the LED power light dims quite a bit. I am using an external power source plugged into the wall.

Please help if possible, I want to get this thing on my car!

That suggests you have a short circuit somewhere that is preventing the MS from powering up. To check for a short in the Megasquirt PCB, power up the Megasquirt on a Stimulator or on the car and check the following points for voltage with a multimeter.

You should find the same voltage as the battery voltage on the following points: S12, S12C, the center legs of Q9 and Q12, the left (non-banded) end of D3, the left leg of U5, and the left (banded) end of D9.

You should have 5 volts at the following points: S5, the two +5V holes in the proto area, the right (non-banded) end of D9, the right leg of U5, the left (banded) end of D19, and pins 1, 20, and 31 of the CPU.

Let me know where you find the correct voltages, and where you find the wrong ones.

I really messed this thing up..
S12 has 1.8v, S12C has 1.5v, Q9, Q12 and D3 has 1.8v. U5 has 1.5v, D9 has 2.7 mv.

S5 has 2.6v, prototype 5v has 2.6v, D9 has 3.1 mv, U5 has 5 mv, D19 has 2.7 mv, #1 and #20 have 2.7 mv and #31 has 41 mv.

I'm In the process of double checking all connections.

Check if anything is getting hot, particularly the D19 diode.

D10,D11 and D 13 all seem to be getting hot after being powered on for a bit of time.

Make sure the power supply polarity is not reversed and that D11 and D13 are installed in the correct orientation.

I had D11 backwards on the board. :(

I fixed it, and am getting proper voltages now. but when I try to update, I get the following:

Are you using a direct serial connection, or a USB adapter?

First make sure it's on port 3. To find out what port the USB adapter is using, first make sure the adapter is plugged in and its light is on. Then right-click My Computer and select Manage. Select Device Manager at the left, then scroll down the right hand column until you find the entry that says "Ports (COM & LPT)". Click the plus sign next to it. You should see an entry that looks like "USB Serial Port (COMx)" where x is the number of the port it has grabbed. Let me know what you find.

The port is on 3. I've tried changing it to other ports also just in case, no luck.

Well somehow I got it to work and load the code on it, but now I can't get it to read with MegaTune. I've loaded the correct settings into MegaTune but no luck. I understand it's only supposed to show voltage, but it still won't show that. I then tried Tuner Studio, and it worked fine, read the voltage and all, but now it won't read it again. I don't want to continue soldering until I know it's all fine.

I got it to connect, not too sure how though. I finished the board, and most things seem to be reading correctly. I can have RPM, TPS, O2 show up on megatune, but I'm missing a few things such as the CLT, MAT and voltage. Am I missing a part some where?

What exactly are they reading right now?

After messing with it, I got everything to read on megatune correctly. Far as I know, everything works and is correct. Thanks for the help.
