An old car using Pertronix or similar Points eliminators

Post by drholl »

Hi guys

I’d like to ‘Squirt an old Studebaker that I found in a barn and use a Pertronix unit to eliminate the points in the distributor. The car runs well with the Pertronix points eliminator kit in it.

But I’m not too sure on the setup for points, which I believe the Pertronix would also be the same.
So here’s a PDF on my best guess in the base ignition settings.

Does this look correct? I'd like to not burn up the original Prestolite coil.

I've included a PDF showing how I "THINK" the system works on the 2.886 code.
I "THINK" this would also work for points. Yes?

Cranking Trigger = Trigger Return
Ignition input Capture = Going LOW
Spark Output = Going LOW (Normal)
Coil Charging Scheme = Standard Coil Charge

Thanks guys, I'm not too good on the Basic Ignition settings section. Especially that inverted part.

Assuming you're not using MS to map the ignition, you can't do any harm to the coil etc. MS only requires a tach signal from the ignition to tell it engine speed. Much the same as fitting an electronic tachometer to a car which didn't have one.

Just replacing points with an electronic switch makes to difference to MS settings for points ignition.
