odd ignition problem after engine reinstall

Post by pure insanity »

i recently pulled my engine and gave it a new head gasket, rod and main bearings, sealed up some oil leaks and degree'd the cam after surfaceing the head. upon reinstalling the engine, i cant make it run correctly again. was running fine when pulled just was getting water in the cylinder. when i degree'd the cam i advanced the cam 3 degrees to pick up a little bottom end and i was actually concerned that i went to far so i backed the cam timing up and no change whatsoever. it almost acts like its running 180* out of time but when i pull the spark plug wires from the edis coil pack, it acts like there is almost no change. no one spark plug wire makes it drop a cylinder. im 99% sure its not an engine issue and it doesnt appear to be a megasquirt/wiring issue but i dont know what to think. can someone look over my msq and a datalog and see if they see something out of the ordinary. thanks very much.

1987 chrysler conquest, running ms2, v 3.57, 2.89 code. edis 4.

If it seems to be running 180 degrees out of time, is there any chance you got the firing order mixed up when you put the plug wires back on the coil pack?

i tried reversing the plug wires at the coil pack but didnt get much success. when i swapped 1 and 4 with 2 and 3 at the coil, it really tried to run like total crap. got backfires thru the intake and all sorts of bad things. it was clear enough to tell me that it was def not the way to run the plug wires. i even went back thru the edis wiring page of the megamanual to be sure i was correct on the firing order. it is correct.

Note that the MegaManual has the coil connections reversed over normal Ford practice. But this doesn't matter if you use one or the other - just don't mix them. ;-)
