ignition output test

Post by Keith1365 »

I have been running MS2 fuel only for years. I tried to use the ignition side without success. I am using a crank trigger and trying to drive the coil using the direct coil method, running the ignition directly to the coil. I believe all the jumpers and pull ups are installed correctly. Is there an easy way to check if the ecu is working and sending a signal to the coil? I have not been able to get it spark.

Firstly, is the crank trigger working correctly? You should see cranking RPM in a log on an attempted start. Have you got a Stim? does the ignition LED flash at slow RPM?

I'm assuming you have installed the coil driver, if a passive single coil.

The crank trigger works as the car has been running on fuel only for several years. The coil driver has been installed, It logs rpm when you crank. Do the settings have to be different for the ignition set up when using a crank trigger rather than an HEI? I went with the crank trigger because I was having trouble with noise and erractic RPM using an HEI.

It is sort of in two parts. The tach signal from the trigger is needed for both injection and ignition. If that is OK you can concentrate on the ignition coil driver. As I said, a Stim has an LED connected to the ignition output driver which will show if that is working.

I will put the stim on it this weekend and see what I get.

Put it on the stim. The ignition light is on dimly at all times no matter what you have the inputs set on. When you turn up the RPM,the ignition light immediately gets bright. I assume this is correct? Or should the ignition only fire with it sees RPM?

Any idea on what is wrong with it or burned out?

If the ignition LED is on dimly at all times, I'd guess you have a problem with the coil driver circuit. Is the BIP373 properly insulated from the heatsink?

I will take it out again to see if I can see any issues. Just a note, mounting it under the dash is a great idea until you install air conditioning and it takes 45 minutes to get it out and longer to put it back in. Is there anything else I can check while it is out again? I have a new coil driver. Should I just replace the one in it now?
