Newbie checking on...here's MS my plan.

Post by grtskydog »

Hi all, glad to be here. I've read the Megamanual, as well as Matt and Jerry's new book (excellent read for a new guy, btw). I know I'll still have plenty of research, questions, and homework, but luckily there's forums like this, plus I have a car with gobs of aftermarket support.

My project is a 85 Mustang with a 351W making about 375 fwhp. It's got an Edelbrock AVS and mech pump, so I'm treating it like a carb conversion on a '60s car. Right now spark is a 4-pin HEI, E-coil, and a Duraspark dizzy. I've decided that even though TBI would be the easiest, I would rather have a dry-flow setup. Here's my plan... input is greatly appreciated:

Plumbing---
-Fox EFI tank and lines from donor
-in tank 190 or 225 lph pump...plenty out there for Fox Mustangs
-various AN fittings and braided stainless to tie the loose ends.

Induction---
-1000 CFM 4bbl throttle body BBK or Edelbrock, or luck out on eBay used. (hood scoop/hole is on there now, so I'm set up for a round air cleaner)
-ProProducts Hurricane MPFI manifold w/matching rails (the easy way) or Torker II, machined for bungs, welded, modded for rail brackets, spacers, etc (the $$ hard way).
-13" Ford Motorsport drop-base air cleaner with K&N (what's on it now)
-Ford 30 lb "red tops" (already purchased)

Spark--
-Probably lock out the Duraspark on there now and yank the vacuum can. I know a lot of Megasquirters have done this, so it's not new ground.
-I have a universal CD ignition in the garage...Summit made by MSD or Mallory. Hoping I can make that work.

ECU--
I'm thinking I'll do a MS2 v3 and batch/bank fire it. Sequential right now just seems like a pain, but with some experience maybe in the future I can do it. Not really looking forward to busting out the soldering iron, as I was never really a Radio Shack type, but I feel it's a rite of passage in this endeavor...LOL.

Now some random thoughts...sorry. I wanted to do a TFI Ford dizzy, but I had heard of clearance issues (??), plus if I can use stuff I already have at my disposal, why spend the cash. Also, intake manifolds. I've read a ton of theory/conjecture/personal truths on MPFI and single vs dual plane, and carb vs EFI powerband ratings on a manifold. I am looking for 2000-6000 RPM street driving, not 4000-7000 strip driving. I really think the perfect intake would be the edelbrock ProFlo2 "spider" intake, but AFAIK you have to buy the $3500 kit to get it. I don't think the Super Victor EFI is the same thing, the Pro Flo appears to have smaller runners (plus it say "pro-flo" on it). I guess there's really not much of a market for DIY carb-looking EFI conversions. If you want it, you DIY. 8)

Well that's it. I look forward to any input and experience you all may have with similar stuff. Just try to think back at all the stuff you DIDN'T know when you started DIY fuel injection...that's me. :D

Your plan looks reasonable enough. Our experience has been that a carbed intake will behave much the same when converted to EFI but often picks up a bit better low end. In other words, we haven't tested the Hurricane manifold ourselves, but it's probably a pretty high winding intake.

Matt,
I hear ya. That's why I was toying with the idea of acquiring a Torker 2 for the lower power band (should still rev well past 6K). Need to get quotes on machine work and figure out which bungs would work best, what kind of injector angle I can get away with, etc. I would imagine the main concern in a lower-rise intake is getting everything to clear the rails and fit an air cleaner, and you never know that until you mock it up, or find someone else who's done it already (the preferred method). I have a feeling my trusty drop-base FMS one isn't going to be the best choice when it's all said n' done.

The pre-machined Hurricane would be much easier than fabricating, but I worry that it could be a dog at lower RPMs. Who knows, it could be loads of fun.

Ill look the hurricane up on monday when i go back to work. Edelbrock does offer their efi manifolds separately. Plan sounds almost like my boats plan except im using all 5.0 stuff from an 89 stang. :D

I have the Super Victor EFI on a 5.0 Ford. It is great so far. I've not seen an issue with the low end but I haven't done much stret driving. I was concerned at first but the Edelbrock tech people said the same rules don't apply to EFI. Plus those huge runners look really cool and you can see all the way to the valve from the carb/tb flange.

I'm also running the 1000CFM Edelbrock throttle body.

A number of the reasons you lose low-end torque with carbed manifolds go out the window with EFI - the Holley Stealth Ram is quite streetable despite having the same lower intake casting as a Weiand tunnel ram except for bosses added for injectors. Not all of them, though - long, skinny runners are still good at building velocity at low RPM.

Thanks for the replies. "Streetable" is the key here. I'd hate to lose 1500-3000 RPM drivability due to a manifold designed for 4000-9000 RPM, but like you say the carb rules don't necessarily apply. The Hurricane looks a little less 'extreme' than the Super Vic...so if what Patrick reports is true, I may be fine with the Hurricane. I will also call Edelbrock when I get a chance and see if they sell the ProFlo2 intake separately. I agree, the SuperVic does look pretty badass on the Windsor.

I think the Torker II would be a cool street MPFI manifold, but after adding up the DIY costs, including decking out my MIG for Al welding, it's getting steep.

Yes, Edelbrock, offers the Victor and a Super Victor manifolds with Injector bungs and Fuel rails, without the ProFlow2.
